“Ascendance” public Sculpture art,
Curved steel, steam bent oak, integrated LED lighting and audio experience.
Philadelphia, PA | 2025
Architect: Studio Cooke John
Design Engineer: Quill Hyde
Photos: Tony Turner
Ascendance, by Studio Cooke John, is dedicated to the rich history of the neighborhoods of West Philadelphia. LED lighting was integrated along with audio components to play recordings of community voices and the piece's original musical score.
To bring this project into existence, we created a new technique for steam-bending wood into compound curves and designed custom machines and devices for workholding and metal bending.
Nina Cooke John is a premier New York-based architect and designer who has worked on major cultural and institutional projects around the country. 618 Design is very proud to have fabricated some of her studio's most high-profile projects.
